Custom Gameplay

Below you can find examples of the types of tournaments we host at PTCGL League! In total, our events have had an attendance of over 5,000 (including more than 2,000 unique players).

The Circle Circuit

The Circle Circuit was our flagship series of 2023 and a great example of what we do here. Each event featured a carefully curated custom ruleset, including:
- An event based on Orbeetle's "Evomancy" attack.
- An event where players were restricted to Pokémon with a specific Retreat Cost.
- An event that required the player's Pokémon to evolve across multiple generations of games.
- An event where players were given a 30-card deck core and were asked to complete the deck in a manner of their choosing.
...plus many more!

The Scizor 24

Following that same playbook, we set a more ambitious goal of hosting 24 custom events in 2024. A few examples:
- An event where Pokémon were limited to only regional variants (Hisuian, Galarian, etc)
- An event where every card had to mention the word "discard" in its text.
- An event inspired by Mime Jr.'s "Mimed Games" attack, with each player piloting the exact same 60-card deck.
- An event where a player's submitted decklist would at first be used by them, but then later assigned to other players in subsequent rounds.

Start Deck 100

Sometimes you want to just grab a pre-built deck and play! Our Start Deck 100 series allowed for just that. Players randomly generated several options from a pool of one hundred possible decks, and then chose their favorites to bring into battle!Lead Organizer: Rabidragon

Progression Series

This series allowed players to experience the Sword & Shield era set-by-set with their own simulated booster pack openings. There were 8 events in total, each one building off the last with players maintaining access to their pulls from prior events.Lead Organizers: Hylaster & MattyCims

Team Tournament

Our league does host Standard format tournaments on special occasions, but usually with some element to make it unique. The 3v3 Team Tournament was one such case. Individual success was tied to the team's success, and a special rule ensured that teammates would closely collaborate on their decklists. We typically host team-based events/activities a few times each year.Lead Organizer: Rabidragon

5-Year Anniversary Events

As we approached the milestone of 5 years of custom events in early 2025, it was a pleasure to be able to revisit some events from early in the league's history. A personal favorite was Deck Devastator - players began by selecting a bunch of cards they wanted to use, but as the rounds progressed more and more cards were randomly removed from play. The more people that chose a specific card, the greater the odds it would be removed. It's the classic combination of strategy and luck that I enjoy!Lead Organizer: Rabidragon

...and that is just a sample of what we have to offer! Special thanks to our entire team of organizers and creative support (Ketchi, JRoo, BySuduo & Okorizaru). Together we have surpassed well over 100 custom format events on Pokémon TCG Live, along with many more on PTCGO prior to its sunset. Every tournament was unique in some way, it's an archive of events unlike any other!
